Hardware - How to keep your PC cool

Keeping your PC cool is very important, because an increase of the temperature can lead to overheating problems and damage the CPU. There are several things you can do to prevent this from happening.

The first thing you can do is to use a good thermal paste on the CPU and the graphics card. In my case I use Arctic MX-4, which costs around 5 euros the 8g, but there are even better thermal pastes. Be sure you apply it correctly, the size of a pea in the center of the CPU should be enough.

Having fans in your PC is also very important. The CPU fan is mandatory, and you should use at least one that expels air from the PC case.

Another thing you can do is keeping your PC out of dust. Yes, dust can cause overheating problems, and it's very important to keep your PC clean at all times. In my case I use an electric air blower, with the help of antistatic brushes. Make sure fans are clean as well. You should also open the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and clean it. Some time ago my PC had overheating issues and, after cleaning all the PC properly, it lowered the temperature down around 8 degrees!

The CPU itself is also very important. For example the Pentium D CPUs are known to have overheating problems and you should not use them. You should look at the CPU TDP (Thermal Design Power). For example, 95W CPUs are more prone to overheat more than 65W. In my case, before I used a 95W Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 and I had overheating issues, but then I purchased an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400S, which is only 65W, and now everything goes perfectly. Another PC I had happened the same: It used an AMD Athlon II X4 640, which is 95W and it had problems, then I changed it for an AMD Athlon II X4 610e, which is only 45W and everything went well.
